Tuina (pronounced Twee-Na) is an Oriental Bodywork Therapy that dates back over 2,000 years. Tuina embraces the same Chinese Medicine theory as Acupuncture and it is used to facilitate movement of energy and blood through the meridians, muscles, joints and tissues, allowing the body to naturally heal itself. Both Tuina and Acupuncture work similarly by following the same Chinese Medicine model, but with Tuina there is no needling involved. When a patient arrives for treatment, the practitioner examines the individual and begins to apply protocol. In order to vitalize the body, the practitioner uses various hand techniques and manipulations; thereby stimulating the acupuncture meridians and points upon very specific pain sites. The sensation may vary depending on the symptom(s), location of bodywork, and the
individual’s tolerance. Treatment at times may be intense, but for most, it is very relaxing and has a lasting impact.
Today Tuina has become very advanced in its treatment for various diseases and is used in many hospitals throughout China, in the front line of healthcare. At Acupuncture Remedies, we find Tuina to be especially beneficial for chronic and internal illness including digestive and gynecological irregularities. It can be applied alone or in conjunction with acupuncture. And for those (i.e. children) who are particularly squeamish with needles, Tuina therapy is a great alternative.
